& love still means whatever it means once it's over

Issam A Zeibak

when the sheen of the broken glass on the ground
is a miracle in the morning light

the city gnashes sparrows’ songs
the music still sweet between its teeth

my heartbeat, a 5AM car alarm
wailing & alive in the alleys & streets

& family somewhere
forgetting my face yet keeping my name

& I remember
the motes of dust still dance without the sun
suspended
like sleeping criminals
all innocent
in their dreams

Issam A Zeibak
